Helpful Construction Terms Defined

The construction industry is not different from other industries especially in terms of unique vocabulary relating to the field. As a player in the construction industry, you need to understand and define these terms appropriately in order to fit well in your niche. Here, we have compiled a list of the top terms relating to construction. 

Blueprint

This is supposedly the most common term in the field. It is simply a drawing representation of the project at hand. 

Design-build 

A design build is different from a blueprint though they serve almost similar purposes. It is basically a small structure and a replica of the main project intended to help reduce costs and improve deliverables to clients. 

Bid 

This is simply a proposal put forward for a project based on design documents and specifications.

Design-bid-build 

A design bid-build is simply a design developed by the form contracted by the owner of the project then the firm seeks bids from general contractors to undertake the project. 

Catastrophic failure 

This refers to an event that causes irreversible damage to the project resulting in total loss. Mostly caused by construction accidents that are severe enough to create permanent damage. 

Course  

This is one continuous layer of laid bricks which are joined to form one of the layers of stone or brick in a building. 

Cross Bracing 

This is a reinforcement technique used to add more strength to the structure under construction by adding X-shaped reinforcements. 

All-in-rate 

This refers to the total monetary cost of acquiring an item including both direct and indirect costs. 

The Architect of Record

The architect of record refers to the person in charge of the continuing work on site or whom the construction permits to undertake the overseeing of the project. 

Building Engineer 

Building engineers are the persons responsible for providing and or overseeing the construction, technology, maintenance, and more on a construction site. They are basically responsible for ensuring all machinery, technological devices are smoothly running and offer routine maintenance. 

Daily Report 

This is a daily report compiled by the foreman in site to indicate the activities of the day including the work completed, safety incidents, materials installed, equipment used, worker information and other relevant information.
