The Meaning of Thanksgiving in Construction

Holidays are a great time to reflect, connect with people, relieve ourselves of work-related stress and perhaps travel. Thanksgiving Day reminds us of one important lesson we all need to learn in life and literally add to our to-do list of every other holiday if not every day. Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving day is a day to give thanks and show gratitude to our friends and to ourselves for everything we have accomplished and are about to achieve. In the construction industry, the day is just as important as any other holiday. The day offers an opportunity to relax, give thanks for the progress made over the years.

History of Thanksgiving

The history of the thanksgiving holiday dates back to the 17th century when a group of native Americans and colonists met in the fall of 1621 to share their harvested produce. The holiday, however, did not have an official observance date and many state colonies and post-independence states celebrated it on different occasions. The holiday, however, was not recognized legally until the 19th century when President Lincoln recognized it legally. The holiday has since been observed in the third Thursday of November.

Relevance of Thanksgiving

The holiday is a great opportunity to not only be grateful for all we have but to also relax from all work. The federal and state laws prohibit construction work of any kind on this day, and can attract a fine and a court order to stop the construction work. This gives an opportunity to construction workers to rest of all work. The construction industry is one of the most dangerous industries with one of the highest work-related fatalities. The Thanksgiving holiday gives a golden opportunity to construction workers to be grateful for making it through the challenges they face at work. Construction workers can also have an opportunity to heal from the trauma they face in their line of duty.

What to do on Thanksgiving Day

As a construction worker, thanksgiving brings the opportunity to not only be grateful for life and material possessions, but it also presents the opportunity to visit a colleague with a serious work-related injury and thank them for their bravery and service to the industry. One can also host a party to give thanks to their friends and colleagues and thank them for the continued support over the course of their career.
